Machinima è un neologismo che sta per “machine cinema” o “machine animation”. E' un vero e proprio genere in cui i videogiochi più famosi sono utilizzati per produrre filmati ed animazioni. La tecnica è nata una decina d’anni fa grazie al successo del videogioco The Sims della EA che infatti ha istituito un vero e proprio festival dedicato a questo tipo di lavori. Per chi vuole saperne di più, una tappa obbligatoria è il sito di Machinima Italia e il suo canale Youtube. Una uscita del 2010 ha destato grande interesse: il mediometraggio di John Hillcoat (il regista di The road) che ha usato il videogioco Red Dead Redemption della Rockstar per fare un corto western.
